its been ten years! have you forgotten or do you remember:

-the Philippines' presidential elections of 1986?
-the human cordons for the ballot boxes?
-the counting of the ballots?
-the propaganda on TV?
-the soldiers with guns and tanks in the streets?
-the struggle to take control of Channel 4?
-the hundreds of thousands of, and later,
over a million people on Edsa?
-Cardinal Sin, the soldiers and the Philippine
press calling for PEOPLE POWER???!!!!
-the rush you got as you defied Marcos when you
shouted "Laban!" and pumped the L sign in the air?
-standing yourself between guns and gunfire and being scared, defiant, proud and excited all at the same time?
- praying, whether you were at home watching the events on television, listening to the radio news,
or standing and running in the streets.

or discover what it all meant for the Filipino people at EDSA!

To many of us, our participation in People Power was a patriotic act.

It WAS and STILL IS one of our greatest and
proudest moments of being a Filipino.

    The larger picture:

What is People Power? In my own words, it was a non-violent movement of united Filipino citizens putting their lives at stake and thereby achieving two things:
1) The prevention of violence breaking out between the divided Armed Forces of the Philippines, and
2) The stepping-down from power by Ferdinand Marcos as he conceded that he had indeed lost the Presidential elections to Cory Aquino.

  • The people power movement was born when the filipino people protected election ballot boxes without a thought for their lives.
  • It gained momentum when filipinos rushed to the streets to protect the rebelling Armed Forces, led by Enrile and Ramos, who no longer would support Marcos' claim to the presidency.
  • And it culminated on the day that Marcos left the country of the Philippines.

This was truly a historical event. The filipinos have not seen such widespread nationalistic unity ever since.
